Breast Implant Removal or Replacement

Implant Removal & Replacement · Explant
by dr. Enrina Diah, Sp.BP-RE, KKF & dr. Grace Boaz, Sp.BP-RE

Breast implants can be removed (without replacement) or exchanged for new ones. Removal is chosen for personal or medical reasons; replacement is done to change size, update older implants, or address a leak. If desired, a lift or fat transfer can be performed at the same time.

TWO ACTIONS

Removed or Replaced

This page covers two distinct actions — each planned to suit your needs.

Removal (Explant)
Implants are removed without replacement.
Replacement (Exchange)
The old implant is exchanged for a new one.
INDICATIONS

Who Is It For?

NOTE

During removal, the scar-tissue capsule may also be removed when needed. After removal, the breast shape depends on your skin and tissue — a lift or fat transfer can help restore contour. In a replacement, the old implant is exchanged for a new one.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens to breast shape after implants are removed?

It depends on your skin and tissue elasticity. In some cases a lift or fat transfer is needed to restore the desired contour.

A capsulectomy is the removal of the scar-tissue capsule that naturally forms around an implant. It is performed mainly when hardening (capsular contracture) is present, or when implants are removed or exchanged.

Not routinely. Modern silicone implants are long-lasting, but can be replaced if you want a change or if there is a problem such as a leak.
